Cantaloupe Getting the Band Back Together?

That’s right, we’re back everyone. Tonight will mark the first game of the Fall Cantaloupe season, and in case you were living under a rock (or in some peoples cases, on top of a big one), here’s what you missed this summer:

After a heartbreaking semi final loss in the Spring, the Cantaloupe came into the summer season with their sights set on revenge, and after a 4-0 start, it looked like they just might get it too. That is until Jeff, who unceremoniously left the Cantaloupe for what he called greener pastures got his chance to stick it to his former team in a battle of the unbeaten. Jeff’s team took down the Cantaloupe in week 5, handing them their first loss and ultimately the turning point of the season. Nagging injuries muddied the lineup every week, and the team just never seemed to hit their stride. The ‘Loupe went on a tough 1-2 skid to close out the regular season leading to an early first round exit from the playoffs.

It was clear the team needed to restructure, and Player/Coach/GM Sean O’Neill wasted no time. He started by removing himself from the active roster as he underwent offseason knee surgery to repair- well just about every ligament you can think of. Given the recovery time he decided it was time to bring in some help. The Cantaloupe will be introducing two new Assistant Coaches tonight in former statistician Rachel Eggert along with Cantaloupe legend Aldrin Alday.

Changes on the bench can only do so much in this league though, and the fact remained that the team needed reinforcements on the court. Luckily after an extended IR stint, one of the Cantaloupes all time leading scorers will be making his return as Tim is officially back for the Fall season. O’Neill didn’t stop there though as this offseason also saw the signing of two other former Cantaloupe greats in Trevor Markovich and Andrew Torney. Markovich will be splitting a spot with Ryan Deal for the Fall while Torney has signed on to be full time. Everyone knows Trevor possesses the smoothest postgame on this side of the Delaware but when I caught up with him last week he informed me he’s been putting in a lot of work from behind the arc to help expand his game. As for the former track star, Torney’s cardio could be the jolt of energy this team was missing and his length should provide a lot of versatility on both offense and defense.

The question remains though, will this all be enough? Can a revamped coaching staff and a few familiar faces get us back to the mountaintop? These questions and more will start to be answered tonight as the road to Playmore glory kicks off with the Fighting Cantaloupe taking on the Certified Ballers at 8 pm.
