Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, hold on to your melons because the Cantaloupe are back, and the Fruit Basket was rocking last night as the boys took down the Free Agent squad 57-37 led by a strong offensive showing from G/F Nick Welsh, but more on that later. After a heartbreaking end to the Spring season that saw the Fighting Cantaloupe fall short in the Conference Championship, longtime player coach Sean O’Neill was forced to make some roster moves in what has been nothing short of a tumultuous offseason. A slew of injuries and the departure of both Torney and Mikey G left the team with quite a few holes in the roster.

Still finding himself on the IR after a season ending knee injury in the Spring, O’Neill has done the unthinkable and for arguably the first time in Fighting Cantaloupe history, the team has a true ‘big man’ after signing Stephen P though he did miss game 1 due to prior engagements. He didn’t stop there though as the other offseason signings included a familiar face in Eric Pendry returning for his second stint with the ‘loupe, and newcomer Tyler W. who has also yet to make his highly anticipated debut due to a nagging ankle injury. With injuries piling up, the decision to bring former guard Ryan Deal back on a 10-day contract was easy and after a strong showing in game one, it is looking like he may be here to stay.

Naturally, the hits kept coming though. After leading by just one at the half, Pendry missed the majority of the second half with an illness, and while some late defensive adjustments from head coach Sean O’Neill did manage to swing the momentum and pick up the win, F Chris Butler tweaked his knee and will likely find himself on what is becoming a crowded injured list heading into game 2. Before we get to the official injury report, it is worth noting that the rumor mill has been buzzing with talks of a return for long time Cantaloupe and fan favorite Trevor Markovich who as we all know has the smoothest post moves on this side of the Mississippi.

The Fighting Cantaloupe return to action next Wednesday, July 7th at Total Turf @ 7:30pm on court 2 to take on Scull & Bones aka the Sapphire Blue team. S&B are also 1-0 after they picked up a dramatic 39-37 win over Team Washed Up this past Monday. The Cantaloupe Injury Report heading into that game is as follows:

Sean O: Out (Knee)

Tyler W: Probable (ankle)

Chris B: Questionable (knee)

Pendry: Probable (illness)
