Week 2 Beatdown

An impressive showing in the season opener saw the Cantaloupe riding high as they headed into a Wednesday night matchup with 1-0 Nothing but Net. Sadly the high would only last for the opening five minutes of this week's matchup, a week 2 loss that saw the Cantaloupe come crashing back to Earth getting blown out by a score of 82-40. Coaches and players alike were abhorred about their performance, Chris even going so far as to rip up the official scorers sheet in what many are calling “a futile attempt to erase the atrocity that the fans had just been subjected to.”

Ryan Welsh was virtually the only bright spot for the Cantaloupe so why not start there. Welsh started the game hot, making four of his first five shots to keep pace with Nothing but Net and their early barrage of 3’s. Once Nothing but Net made the defensive adjustment to key in on Ryan, the Cantaloupe fell apart as the offense immediately stalled. Turnover after turnover led to easy transition buckets as the lead quickly grew insurmountable, the Cantaloupe finding themselves down 43-18 at the half. Welsh would finish with 19 points and 3 rebounds. With no other Cantaloupe player reaching double digits, Torney was the next leading scorer with 7 followed by Ryan Deal with 6. Torney also notched a team high 6 rebounds and a couple of assists while Deal added on 3 assists and 2 boards to go with his 6 points.

With the Cantaloupe already down bad in the first half, things got even worse when Jordan, the Rookie of the Year front runner after one week hurt his foot noticeably limiting him for the rest of the game. Jordan already finds himself on the injury report, listed as Questionable for the teams week 3 matchup. However, we did say Ryan was ‘virtually’ the only bright spot, and although it ultimately had no bearing on the outcome whatsoever, after a chaotic scramble for the ball on the baseline, Chris was able to squeak out a pass, finding Dennis ‘Dwilly’ Williamson for an easy layup to notch his first career bucket. It’s like Gandhi said, “In the midst of darkness, light persists.” and even though this was a demoralizing loss, there’s plenty of season left so what better time than now to get back in the win column? Right?

Well, that just might be easier said than done. Despite heading into this week with a record of 0-2, records can be deceiving and the Cantaloupes week 3 opponent Boards Patrol has been in a couple of tough matchups to start the Winter. Going down to the wire against Nothing but Net in their season opener, they lost 56-52, following that up with a 63-49 loss against the now 2-0 This Team. With Jordan's status already in question, early reports have also ruled Tyler out as well meaning that one of, if not both Tim and Lou will be suiting up this week. Cantaloupe week 3 action is set for Wednesday January 26, @ 9:45pm.
