After a gut wrenching week 4 blowout loss, the Fighting Cantaloupe bounced back in a huge way last week, cruising to a 79-43 week 5 win over the now 0-6 Beventy Blixers. The Cantaloupe were pretty much in the driver seat start to finish in this one, so let’s just jump right into the stats.
Tim, who had been struggling from beyond the arc this season finally found his range, knocking down a couple of threes, and exploding for 20 points and 4 boards, while Ryan Welsh continued his hot streak, notching 19 points shooting 8/11 from the floor and 3/5 from three. A pretty efficient night by most standards, but nothing compared to the game Lou had as he failed to miss a shot all night. The Cantaloupe guard finished with 13 points going 6/6 from the floor and knocking down his only look from three. Welsh also hauled in 5 rebounds, tied with Torney for the third most on the team as the Cantaloupe dominated the paint on both ends. Speaking of dominant, Anthony bolstered his case as the better Butler, flirting with another potential double double but falling just short as he finished with 7 points, 3 assists, and 10 rebounds. As for the other half of the Butler boys, Chris’ lackluster season continued as he was the only Cantaloupe player to not record a basket in this one. Being one of the longest tenured members of the team fans have grown increasingly frustrated seeing their once beloved forward continue to regress week by week, and to make matters worse, Butler now finds himself in health and safety protocols, already ruled out for the teams week 6 matchup.
Back to last week though, Tyler had his best game of the season with 6 points and 9 boards, and Joey continued to show his versatility stuffing the stat sheet with 6 points, 5 boards, 4 assists, and 2 steals. Conner finished with 4 points and an assist, and Ryan Deal finished with 2 points and a steal. With the team seemingly hitting their stride on offense, they’ll look to continue to build on their week 5 performance tonight as they face off against the 16th seeded Here We Go Again. Here We Go Again enters week 6 still searching for their first win of the season, falling just short last week in a devastating one point loss to Nothing but Net. Averaging just over 45 points a game though, it should be a good opportunity for the Cantaloupe to build some steam as their back to back rivalry weeks draw near.
After tonight’s game, the Fighting Cantaloupe will hit the road for a week 7 west coast prime time matchup against Jeff the fallen Cantaloupe, followed by a regular season finale against the long time rival Hunt Club Ballers. With the regular season creeping to a close, the Cantaloupe still find themselves right in the thick of the playoff hunt as they currently sit at the 9 spot in the standings. We asked coach O’Neill how he felt about the current playoff race and he emphasized that the team is taking it one week at a time and that their only focus right now is on Here We Go Again. He did also mention that fans would get to see the Welsh Bro’s back in action tonight as Nick will be returning to the court for the second time this season, filling in for Chris. Be sure to tune in tonight as the Cantaloupe take center stage on court 1, tip-off is set for 9pm!
